Degrees of Burn Accidents

Burn injuries are categorized by various levels of severity called degrees. First degree burns are the least severe of burns, while third degree burns are the most severe. McEwen Law Firm has extensively researched all types of burn injuries and is dedicated to providing burn injury victims with the knowledge, experience, and support necessary to win their burn injury case.

First Degree Burns

First degree burns are considered superficial burns. First degree burns affect the top layer of skin and typically do not require extensive medical treatment to heal. Although first degree burns are not life threatening they may result in scars, chronic pain, and emotional trauma.

First degree burns may be caused by chemical exposure, fire, electrical exposure, or a number of other causes. Victims suffering from a first degree burn may suffer additional complications such as infection or fever. These conditions can cause the need for additional medical treatment and recuperation time.

Second Degree Burns

Second degree burns are more severe than first degree burns and involve multiple layers of skin. Second degree burns blister and require more time to heal than first degree burns. These burns are usually accompanied by scarring which can be disfiguring throughout the victim’s life.

Unlike first degree burns, second degree burns may require surgery in order to correct scars and other damage. Second degree burns are also accompanied by an increased risk for infection and other complications due to the severity of the burn.

Third Degree Burns

Third degree burns are the most severe of burns. Third degree burns destroy all skin layers and may also affect bone, nerve, muscle, and fat. These burns require immediate and extensive medical attention.

Third degree burns result in scarring, chronic pain, and a number of other medical conditions. Third degree burns are also the most life threatening and may be accompanied by a number of complications.
